From falling pregnant to delivering your baby, CAM therapies have a role to play in helping you and your partner.
Infertility is a common problem in England and often no cause can be found. Even where a cause is known, difficulty conceiving can leave you disappointed and feeling without hope. Any resulting stress and depressed mood will inevitably reduce even further the chances of becoming pregnant. They may also begin to undermine other areas of your life.
Each in its own way, complementary therapies can help to reduce the consequences of infertility and at the same time increase the chances of becoming pregnant.
Research continues to confirm the value of some CAM therapies in helping overcome infertility. A study published in the journal
Fertility and Sterility
in May 2006 showed that ‘Acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer (ET) significantly improves the reproductive outcome of IVF/ICSI, compared with no acupuncture.’
In the same journal, a further study using hypnosis concluded, ‘This study suggests that the use of hypnosis during ET may significantly improve the IVF/ET cycle outcome in terms of increased implantation and clinical pregnancy rates. Furthermore, it seems that the patients’ attitude to the treatment was more favorable.
